INDIAN ACADEMICS - SUAVE RACISM
The head line of leading broadsheets flashed the 100% cut off news
across India. 2016 we are going ahead with 754 total universities and
more than 125 million populations. The world is looking at India in a
positive manner and we showcase our huge population as an asset of
human resource. I seriously think we need introspection.
Every state board has declared the successful results of more than 90%
students have passed and a huge number of students have scored
distinction. This effect has no connection with fate or hard work of
student. I personally have been witnessed the process of paper
checking and now when a 12th or 10th student comes to me. I just say
best of luck.
The evaluators who receive 9 to 15 rs per paper how do you expect them
to give justice to your ward? Evaluators have a daunting task to
complete paper checking in minimum given time. The 25 to 30 page long
answer books require at least 30 minutes reading, some additional time
to think and evaluate and some extra time to make entries. If an
evaluator, honestly give a try then he/she can check only 16 papers in
a day. It will earn him 144 to 240 rupees a day. How many of us who
spend more than this amount on our one meal.
Now let’s talk about the quality of teachers. Most of the teacher in
government or private schools comes from villages. The educational
requirement for them is to pass exams of B.Ed. or M.Ed.
B.Ed. or M.Ed. has out dated syllabus. This syllabus does not make
them strong in their subject and their teaching skills. With changing
time and climes psychology of students and society is changed. It is
time to update with syllabus for teaching aids and students
psychology.
Despite the infrastructure and facilities Government schools have
failed to attract the students. Extravagant fees of private schools
attract parents on their 5 star amenities. The quality of education
in private school always remains a question. The contract positions of
teachers and their marginal salaries do not motivate them.
The biggest misconception of convent schools in India needs to change.
They are more famous for their strict norms and disciplines. British
have left the country long back and the convents are run by Indians. I
seriously doubt about their educational background. They may have
fantastic knowledge about their religion or philosophy but what about
academics, current affairs and new technology?
Dave Putwain the UK child psychologist found out the following points
which affect the student,
· Fear of future Consequences
· Their self-esteem
· Student consider the remarks from others
· Fear appeals of teachers
Richard Ryan from Rochester University, New York says, the carrot and
stick approach hamper the learning growth in child in long run. The
game of reward also hampers the child’s growth as child do study for
reward and do no study by heart.
India has a dearth of teachers who have knowledge of psychology,
sociology, communication and language. The much needed subject
knowledge one of many facets of teaching.
Today’s student is equipped with mobile phone and internet. These
students have surpassed the stage of ‘ratta’. They cannot and should
not cram the study. The great Indian tradition of cramming and
chanting cannot be used in study anymore.
According to Dr Fabian Almeida, a well-known child psychiatrist,
parents become more sensitive to their own psychological state as well
as that of their child. It result in children’s conversion disorder.
It is a common yet seldom diagnosed disorder in children.
Indian education system is based on harping the raga of lost glory in
history, geography is a extra knowledge, mathematics and science are
the subject to ‘ratta’ equations. Indian students never think of
applying the academic knowledge in their day to day life or in given
situation. The result they forget once they are done with examination.
Nouveau riche parents cling the mantra of ‘easy way the better way’
and they cling to much costly business equation of apps and services.
They load the student with gadgets.
Senior psychiatrist at Dr LH Hiranandani hospital, Dr Harish Shetty
suggested, "It is very important for parents to have two-way
communication. Instead of being a dictator, parents should explain,
and inform the child,"
These parents of Hollywood dream and wish to make their students
career in a different way. They want special school with sky high
fees. They do not want the ordinary treatment to their treatment. They
consider themselves to be superior to rest of the Indian mass. This
thinking they imbibe on their children. The so called nested children
are not allowed to mix with other children of society.
I read it as a superficial and sacrilegious racism. This racism need
to remove from our country. The cutoff of 100% fuels this racism. What
about the students who have earned 97% marks? Are they not intelligent
students? Why can’t they be admitted in the course of their choice?
Students who earn 97% go to college and get groomed to get more
percentiles. What is so great about the college who only admit the
intellectual cream of India? The students who are admitted they are
destined to make their career what is the contribution of teachers and
college into them?
The world famous scientists were not good in academic study but today
they are leading the world and we are studying them in textbooks.
Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin , Isaac Newton and inventors like
Thomas Edison Public Figures like Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln,
Oprah Winfrey Writers and Artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Emily
Dickinson, Steven Spielberg, J. K. Rowling Musicians like Elvis
Presley, The Beatles & Athletes like Michael Jordan were not good in
academics but they made this world a better place to live.
Do not impose your aspirations on your children. Let them live and
love this world. Do no teach them to divide on the basis of caste,
creed and class. These things they have never applied. Small innocent
children are full of love and affection. Make their life and make this
world a better place to live.
Education is made to evolve the human being. Unfortunately it seems,
it has lost its purpose in India. Merit is just the number and nothing
else. One can make their fate with handwork and talent. Academic merit
cannot measure your talent.
