INDIAN SOCIAL MEDIA

INDIAN SOCIAL MEDIA

TCS has recently conducted a survey where they found out, the youth of
India prefer paper than social media. At the same time we find the
headlines on ‘freedom of speech’.  Lately the high court has given the
guidelines on ‘freedom of speech’.

Late 90s when internet came in public domain everybody felt the
freedom of expression. People used it as a platform to express their
views on various subjects from food, fashion to politics. MIRC chat
soon replaced with yahoo chat. The gossip of youngsters and their
internet adventures filled the coffee shops.

Generation Y was belong to early globalization days now it is replaced
with Generation Z.  Pradipta Bagchi VP and Global head communication
TCS has proudly expressed her remarks on Indian youth. She find
today’s youth is techno savvy, digital natives. They are opening many
opportunities for career and learning.  They prefer the news from News
paper and not any other media.  43% choose TV but they also shoulder
for news paper.

Social networking sites like Facebook and Tweeter have got prime
importance in India. Bollywood stars have kept separate personal staff
to handle their social media accounts. It is a new offshoot of public
relation industry. For many mass communication graduates it came as a
boon.

Blogs which once considered being a personal domain of expression
today considered as news feed.  The murders of online bloggers of
Bangladesh, Calcutta, and Haryana shook the country.  The amendments
in IPC have made it more conscious. The various social media platforms
are needed to use with utmost care to express your feelings.

The question remains, do we have freedom of expression on internet?
Well, if we consider it globally then we need to understand the facts
which are out.  Facebook is proved to be biased in US during this
political campaign. Last month facebook deleted some pages of
criticism on gay marriage.  West has concrete policies to control the
social media posts. Last month the Guardian launched the campaign on
the openness of web; it is a matter of concern as today web is more
powerful than any media mogul.  This social media triggered pink
revolution in Tunisia and then spread it to 6 adjusting countries.
This is considered to be a potential tool of communication today.

Internet and social networking which are made to open up the
communication getaways. They have been extensively exposed for
business, politics and entertainment. Will there be a day when all
barriers of religion, race, language, culture and identity will vanish
and everybody will live happily. This might seems a day dream, then
let’s take a look at the quote made by John Perry Barlow in 1996.

“Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and
steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the
future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome
among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.”

I positively think, Z generation will be liberal and mature enough to
read between the lines. The conventional means of handling and
spreading information are challenged. Power to publish and power to
recall is the key of internet. Information once published will not
become history, it can be referred anytime anywhere.
