The Film School

The Film School
This year when city’s reputed film school had strike and which went on
for more than 6 months. It is very sad that strike took place. The
concept of making career in film is not digested across India. There
are very few films schools in India to cater the niche demand of
budding film professionals.
Today, let us understand the grandeur of Film. Andrei Tarkovsky once
said in his book sculpting in time, “Film is a reflection of society”.
Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy, British Writer O
Henry and William Shakespeare shoulder this opinion.
William Shakespeare always used the Greek locations and background in
the story. He judiciously chose the stories of British soil but took
the names and locations in drama which belong to different land. He
used fantasy, imagination, poetry, music at his advantage to stage the
social issues. It is William Shakespeare, Denial Quixote, Victor Hugo;
George Bernard Shaw crafted their characters with more precision on
their socio-political background.
Pickwick papers or Great Expectations are famous for their
characterization and their emotional portrayal. Writer has left much
for us to imagine. Writer has used to portray the social ethos and
political background of that time. These artworks reflect the timber
of society.
As films started at their infant stage they used the visual
composition or elements and principals of design. Those were the black
and white days but the makers were the masters of basics. Sergei
Eisenstein when made films and showcased Czar used harsh light,
gigantic shadows and proportion, line the design elements and
principals for shot composition.
D W Griffith used cut in editing in a different manner, Sergei
Einstein used it in different manner. This created a different thought
process across globe.
In Italy films like Roam the city and Bicycle thief made by Roberto
Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica made films on day to day life and
experiences. This neo-Italian cinema influenced French Cinema.
Federico Fellini being an Italian director gave us the immortal
characters and feel of cinema.
French film directors like Jean Luc Godard; François Trauffaut added
different dimensions in making of cinema. Godard made films and
generated film grammar beyond fiction and non-fiction. Trauffaut made
films to developed characters at par excellence.  Their cinema talked
about characters, their psychology and beyond.
American cinema became mature with masters like Orson Wells and many
others, Hollywood always made movies with their own style and it
became famous as Hollywood cinema. German cinema added the chapters of
‘German Expressionism’ on the use of light and sets. It has heavy
influence of drama light and direction on cinema. Today when we watch
the old German masters, it is a visual feast of design elements and
principals.
Japanese cinema gave us Yoshihiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa to practice
basic grammar and the use of space and time in film and novel. Russia
film director Andrei Tarkovsky handled the subject which crosses the
boundaries of nation, language, senses and imagination. Satyajeet Ray,
Ritwik Ghatak, Govind Nihalani of India enriched Indian cinema with
its variety of culture and grassroots problems.
Cinema is the hybrid art form which creates a synergy of social
sciences, history, literature, culture, music, visual language,
philosophy and social issues.
Making a film school and making it compartmentalize the specialization
will jeopardize the very existence of cinema. The students of
direction will never able to direct Shakespeare writing until they
understand the ethos and background of William Shakespeare.
Cinematographer cannot able to shoot the period film of William
Shakespeare era until he understands the socio-political milieu of
that time. Only socio-political milieu will not able to create the
imagery, it is necessary to understand the psychology of character and
society. The work of cinematographer is to make audience feel the
creation and transcend the thoughts of director to silver screen.
Editor of the film will not be able to edit the film unless he knows
the essence of film making. James Bond films are British films and
they are known for their crisp and classical editing practice. Bond
films use conventional techniques to make films. American Mission
Impossible film portrays the technical superiority. Making of cinema
is a process of art and not a process of production. One can notice
the difference when one compare Bond and Mission Impossible films.
On Indian turf many directors have tried to adopt the western films in
to Indian soil and their attempt yield to no vain. French Kiss and
Pyar to Hona Hi Tha, Story of Love by Krzysztof Kieślowski and Ek
Chotishi Love story of Manish Koirala, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill
and Kill Dil. Bond films and Indian Agent Vinod there are many films
made as the loose and lousy remake of Indian version. There are some
good films as well they can be admired in this spree of madness.
William Shakespear’s Hamlet and its adaptation ‘Haidar’, Othello and
‘Omkara’, Woody Allen’s ordinary people and Akele Hum Akele Tum and
very few examples we can count where Indian directors have given their
contribution.
Film Schools which teach age old syllabus with no direct exposure to
literature, sociology, psychology, arts, music, dance and language
remains insufficient to hone the skills of budding film maker. If we
take a look at today’s scenario of successful scriptwriters,
directors, editors, cinematographers and music directors most of them
have not gone to any film school. They have made their fortune with
their passion and hard work.  Any hardworking film admirer can carve
career in film line.
Making film requires synergizing the mass and getting the work done.
It is a Himalayan task. It need a person with vision.
I wish best of luck to all film aspirants and assure them, if you are
decided to cast your career in film then you can
